Ugandan rapper Kracbone announces collaborative album
Ugandan rapper and producer Kracbone has announced he will release a new album titled EGO on 13 August.
The 19-track album features 47 hip hop and Afro-fusion artists and is now available for pre-order here. EGO was recorded between August last year and February and will be released under Kracbone's Ace Plug Entertainment label.
Artists featured on the album include Ugandan musicians Big Sam, St. Nelly-Sade, Sylvester Kabombo, Roman Jazzy, Lady Slyke, Pyramid MC, Tucker HD and Akongo Wero, as well as Star King (Central African Republic), Da Twins Runiga (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Jyro (Kenya), among others.
Commenting on the album, Kracbone told Music In Africa that he enjoyed "switching it up on each track so that the listener wouldn't recognise the same producer on two songs in a row. Hip hop music is at the bottom of the food chain in the Ugandan music industry.
“EGO is about imagining the future and that future is about resilience and artists coming together and finding ways to better market and promote their music. Afro-fusion is gaining a lot of traction here so I thought a fusion project would do better than a purely hip hop project."
Kracbone says the project allowed him to expand his creative process. "I cannot wait to share what I learnt during the production process with other artists. A few artists are willing to be flexible and try something different. I hope this album would be an example of possibilities that experimentation has to offer."
EGO is a fusion of multiple cultures and genres such as include rumba, zouk, Afro-pop, kidandali, reggae and dancehall, taarab, R&B, Afrobeats and house music. It seeks to celebrate current female rappers in hip hop, which the musician says is male dominated.
"To recognise their hustle and struggles, and to encourage more to join hip hop in Uganda, we recorded a song called 'B.A.D' (Beautiful Assertive Divas). It's one of my favourite tracks, and it talks about women empowerment."
Asked to describe the inspiration behind the album title, Kracbone said: "I had a quick look at the music scene and realised that many artists are missing out on career-changing opportunities because of their ego. The title is fit for the album because this project was supposed to include many more artists. Still, unfortunately, not everyone we approached to work with accepted our invitation to collaborate."
