Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy to clash for COVID-19 awareness
Ghanaian dancehall stars Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy will face off in Asaase Sound Clash, a music battle that seeks to raise awareness around COVID-19. The initiative was launched in Accra on 4 August and is organised by local broadcaster Asaase Radio.
The announcement has generated much excitement in the country. The concert will be streamed live on Asaase Radio’s social media pages and YouTube channel. It has also received the endorsement of industry stakeholders including Samini. The concert date is expected to be announced in the coming days.
At the launch, the music stars confirmed their readiness to take part in the worthy cause. They also conceded to the harsh effects of the pandemic on Ghana’s economy, particularly the creative industry. Last month, Shatta Wale announced the postponement of his new album due to the pandemic and now hopes that Asaase Sound Clash will support the government's efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
Ghana Tourism Authority CEO Akwasi Agyeman commended Asaase Radio for the initiative and praised the accomplishments of Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy in adding positively to Ghana's image.
"We believe in music tourism, and I can tell you for a fact that these two giants have paid their dues to put Ghana on the map," he said.
Deputy Minister of Health Bernard Okoe-Boye alluded to the value of popular voices to educate and encourage health protocol compliance in the wake of the pandemic.
"There are thousands out there that when I speak science for one hour, they wouldn’t listen to me, but when Shatta [Wale] wears the mask, they'll wear the mask, when Bhim [Stonebwoy] wears the mask, they'll wear the mask. So mentorship is key."
The concert adds to the various efforts that the musicians have made in the fight against the pandemic. Last month, Stonebwoy hosted an economics workshop for young people, while Shatta Wale put on a number virtual perfomances to raise COVID-19 awareness. In April, he donated relief items to the James Camp Prison, and on Twitter, he has introduced #TuesdayMarket, a hashtag that allows his fans to advertise their businesses.
As the country heads to the polls later this year, the artists also called on the public, particularly young people, to desist from violence. Seeing as the artists wield significant influence on the youth, the call will go a long way to calm tempers ahead of the general election.
