Zim: Vusa Mkhaya to rerelease 2016 album
Austria-based Zimbabwean artist Vusa Mkhaya will rerelease his 2016 album Umnyanyatha – Songs from the Soul of Zimbabwe on 26 June.
The 13-track album was remastered by UK-based Austrian producer Diz Heller. It will be available for streaming and download on various online music platforms. It can be pre-ordered here.
"I rereleased my album because I had released it independently before and this time it’s being released by Naxos Records,” Mkhaya told Music In Africa. “The difference is that we have three more songs and the album was digitally remastered to suite international mastering standards.
“I stayed true to myself and made sure that the album is as authentic as it can be. All tracks were recorded live and my singing is pure, no autotune. We made sure that it stays organic and the stories I tell are family-friendly. The album sleeve has translations of my lyrics in English, German and Spanish so that everyone can follow the stories I tell.”
Mkhaya said the album touches on themes of ubuntu, togetherness and love.
“It is important to know and embrace who we are and to be proud of ourselves, our upbringing and our surroundings. I believe we should treat others the way we expect to be treated and teach ourselves to be always kind to each other. This album talks about all these things and its title was inspired by my childhood nickname, Manyanyatha.
"The second title, ‘Songs from the Soul of Zimbabwe’, is for international audiences. We want to introduce Zimbabwe to those who have no idea where it is and it was important for me to include the name Zimbabwe on it somehow. The songs on the album are all inspired by different life events and questions, which affect people in my home town and beyond.”
Umnyanyatha – Songs from the Soul of Zimbabwe also features ‘Mayibabo’, ‘Manyanyatha’, ‘Lizobuya’, ‘Lalela’, ‘Siyeza’, ‘Uthando’, ‘Bayakhala’, ‘Naisiyai’, ‘Abalalanga’ and ‘Zhiya’. The three additional songs are ‘Ubuntu’, ‘Africa’ and ‘Kudala’.
Mkhaya’s previous albums are The Spirit of Ubuntu (2006) and Vocalism (2012).
