Participate in African Capitals of Culture COVID-19 survey
African Capitals of Culture (ACC) is inviting cities and cultural actors on the continent to participate in its online survey to measure the impact of COVID-19 on the cultural sector.
With the survey, ACC seeks to:
- Estimate the impacts of the health crisis caused by COVID-19 on the cultural sector.
- Raise awareness among decision makers and partners on the need to organise the maintenance, support, and revival of cultural, artistic, and creative activities in African cities.
"The closure of heritage sites, museums, theatres, cinemas and other cultural institutions due to health containment or the halting of international tourist trips jeopardises the continuity of the activity of artists, creative industries and cultural tourism," ACC director-general Khalid Tamar said.
"The work and mobility of artists and players in the cultural and events sector have a negative impact on the organisation of exhibitions, fairs and events. Cancellations and postponements of these activities also affect local economies and audiences in the cities where these activities were scheduled. It is important that measures support and revive economic activities also take account of the arts, culture and creative industries."

The deadline for submitting answers is 30 May.
The ACC is a programme led by United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA). Every three years, an African city is declared African Capital of Culture, which means that 12 months of specially planned cultural activities take place there.
Marrakesh in Morocco was originally selected as the first African Capital of Culture but the city surrendered the title to Rabat in February at the request of the Moroccan government. A ceremony was scheduled for 26 March in Rabat, but the UCLGA postponed the festivities due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
