Mikhaela Kruger

Bio

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Mikhaela Kruger is a jazz singer and songwriter. Her interest in music began when she was five years of age. At that age, she started learning how to play piano and her interests were in classical music. While doing grade 8 in 2009, she was awarded a ABRSM for classical piano and flute. She attended Beau Soleil Music School where she played in various wind ensembles. She began her formal training as a musician in her first year of university under the mentorship of Amanda Tiffin.

In 2013, she was awarded her Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Composition and Arrangement with distinction from the South African College of Music (SACM), UCT. She majored in jazz voice as her primary instrument and jazz piano as her second.

Accolades include being a finalist in the GrandWest Open Mic Night hosted by Heart 104.9 fm in 2011 and runner-up in 2012. Her quintet was awarded second place at the Jessica & Bernard Baxter Ensemble Competition (2012) and she was a runner-up in the jazz section of the prestigious FMR Bursary Awards (2013). She has been a recipient of
a SAMRO bursary (2011) and the Alba Windham scholarship (2012).

During her studies, she performed regularly at various SACM events, most notably with the UCT Big Band and with the UCT Jazz Voices, a five-member jazz vocal ensemble. She has performed her original music and arrangements at various jazz venues within Cape Town including Straight No Chaser and the Crypt Jazz Restaurant.

Mikhaela was selected to attend the “Keep An Eye” summer jazz program in association with Manhattan School of Music at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam in June 2014. She attended workshops and master classes facilitated by Becca Stevens (the U.S.), John Riley (the U.S.), Dick Oatts (the U.S.), Bert Joris (BE) and Bart Fermie (NE). In that same year, she was selected to sing in the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band at the Graham’s Town National Arts Festival who performed at the international “Joy of Jazz” festival in Johannesburg under the leadership of Mark Fransman.

She has performed alongside international artists such as pop sensation, Imogen Heap and Shakatak bassist, George Anderson. In 2015, she was selected as one of six finalists in the jazz category to compete in the SAMRO Overseas Bursary Competition for Singers where she received the merit award.

She is currently involved in a variety of different projects ranging from Afro-folk music, to swing, to more electronic-based collaborations. She works as a part-time vocal teacher at Westerford, Herzlia and South Peninsula High School.
