Imazzalen – Amazigh Music Group from Southern Morocco
Imazzalen (Arabic: إِمَازَّالْنْ) is an Amazigh music group formed in 2005 in Dcheira, a suburb of Agadir known for its rich musical scene. The group is deeply influenced by iconic bands like Izenzaren and Nass El Ghiwane, and is rooted in Taznzart, a traditional genre native to the Souss region. Imazzalen blends Amazigh musical heritage with spiritual Sufi rhythms such as Gnawa, Hamadcha, and Ahl Souss, while integrating contemporary sounds and instruments.
The name “Imazzalen” refers to “those who connect” or “intermediaries” in the Amazigh language, symbolizing their role as cultural messengers who use music to bridge generations, preserve identity, and promote social awareness. Often described as “musicians of the stage,” the group is known for its dynamic live performances and improvisational energy.
Their songs address themes such as environmental struggles, education, human rights, and cultural preservation. Signature tracks like “Afllah” (The Farmer) and “Anzar” reflect their poetic and political expression. In 2023, they released the album “Igoudar”, focused on raising awareness about the preservation of Amazigh collective granaries, an essential element of Morocco’s architectural and cultural legacy.
