The Soil

Bio

Soweto-based acapella trio made up of Buhle Mda, Luphindo ´Master P´ Ngxanga, and Ntsika Fana Ngxanga. Their signature ‘kasi soul’ sound is an eclectic mix of jazz, hip hop, Afro-pop and soul and is characterized by slick harmonies and beatboxing. In the past seven years The Soil has graced stages of major local events such as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Grahamstown Arts Festival, Jazz by the River, as well as theatre stages of the Nelson Mandela Theatre.

They released their long-awaiting self-titled debut album in 2011, which enjoyed huge sales in South Africa. In October 2012 they won a South African Traditional Music Award (Satma) for best Afro-Soul act. Their track ‘Sedilaka’ featured in the Hollywood movie Dark Tide starring Oscar winner Halle Berry. In March 2013 The Soil performed at the historic Apollo Theatre in New York for the African Now! Festival. Coinciding with the tour, a Super Deluxe Edition of their album was released for the US market. In August 2013, they performed at the Edinburgh Festival in the UK.
