Blondie and Pappa

Bio

Blondie & Pappa stand as one of the pioneering forces to emerge from Soweto in the late 1970s, helping to shape the sound of South African disco and soul during a transformative era in the country’s music history. Formed in 1977 by brothers Blondie Makhene (born Keoagile Gerald Makhene on September 16, 1955) and Andrew Makhene, the duo quickly established a signature style that blended kwela, jazz and pop into a vibrant, accessible sound. Their music captured both the spirit of township life and the broader global influences shaping the era, positioning them as innovators who bridged traditional South African rhythms with contemporary disco sensibilities.

Their rise was marked by a string of notable releases, including the hit single “Don’t Burn Your Bridges” (1978) and albums such as Tell It All Brothers (1979) and Together (1982), which cemented their place within the country’s evolving music landscape. Beyond their own catalogue, Blondie & Pappa built a reputation as versatile collaborators, working as a backing band and contributing to projects with groups like The Big Dudes, before later aligning with iconic artist Brenda Fassie. Although the brothers parted ways in the early 1980s to pursue individual careers, their legacy endures as trailblazers whose sound helped lay the foundation for future generations of South African artists, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s disco and soul heritage.
