Bongani Nicholas Ngomane

Bio

Bongani Nicholas Ngomane is an award-winning South African dramaturge, theatre-maker, academic, and cultural strategist whose work powerfully bridges performance, research, and social transformation. With over a decade of experience across the cultural and creative industries, he has established himself as a leading voice in using theatre as a tool for dialogue, activism, and community engagement.

Currently a PhD candidate in Drama at the University of the Witwatersrand, Ngomane specialises in public performance ethnography and applied theatre, positioning his work at the intersection of academia and lived experience. His practice is rooted in African storytelling, with a strong focus on township realities, social justice, and the reimagining of democratic spaces through performance.

He serves as a dramaturge at the South African State Theatre, where he contributes to programme curation, large-scale adjudication processes, institutional strategy, and audience development. Beyond this, he plays a critical role in shaping cultural discourse through media, communications, and national arts commentary. He is the founder of South African Theatre Review, a growing platform dedicated to critical reflection and documentation of theatre across the continent, as well as the founder of Stage Wizard, a live edutainment initiative advancing creative development and youth empowerment.

Ngomane is the creator of the acclaimed theatrical series Mr. President, a bold and socially resonant work that has received seven Naledi Theatre Awards nominations and continues to engage audiences on issues of inequality, governance, and the lived realities of marginalised communities. His broader body of work reflects a commitment to creating theatre that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply accessible.

His contributions have earned him national and international recognition, including the HSRC Emerging Researcher Award (2023) and selection among South Africa’s Top 100 Shining Stars. His work has been published and featured across major media platforms, and he continues to influence conversations around the role of the arts in shaping society, policy, and identity in the Global South.

Bongani Nicholas Ngomane stands at the forefront of a new generation of African cultural practitioners, redefining the possibilities of theatre as a space for critical inquiry, creative expression, and transformative impact on a global stage.
