Bio

Shukuran Mwachumu, professionally known as Janta, was born on 22 October 1989 in Mangochi District, Malawi. He developed a passion for music at a young age and began his musical journey at just nine years old, teaching himself how to play the piano and guitar.

Janta’s sound blends Afro-Soul and Afrobeat with elements of Afro Pop, R&B, and Hip-Hop, creating a distinctive and versatile musical style that has resonated widely across Malawi and beyond.

Breakthrough and Recognition

Janta gained major recognition in 2015 following the release of his hit single “Divorce” (Banja Ndalilephela). The song topped music charts in Malawi, and its music video premiered on Trace Africa and other major platforms across East Africa, establishing him as one of the most trending artists in Malawi at the time.

In the same year, he won the UMP Award for Best Video Artist of the Year for “Divorce,” earning recognition not only locally but also within the SADC region.

In 2017, he won the Nyasa Music Award for Song of the Year with his hit single “Wangongole” (Debt Collector). He was also nominated for Producer of the Year at the 2018 UMP Awards, highlighting his impact behind the scenes as a music producer.

Conservation and Social Impact

In 2019, Janta collaborated with fellow Malawian artist Tigris on a conservation-themed duet advocating for wildlife protection. The song, created in partnership with the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust and Conservation Music Malawi, raised awareness about the declining tiger population. It was released on World Lion Day (10 August) to amplify its conservation message.

Beyond his success as a recording artist, Janta is an accomplished producer who has worked with several prominent Malawian urban artists, including:

Gwamba, Onesimus, Lucius Banda, Lulu, Suffix, SamSmak, Martse, Nepman, Sangie, Dan Lu, Kelly Kay, and Tay Grin, among others.
