Sakhile Hlatshwayo (5 July 1998 – 9 August 2021), professionally known as Killer Kau, was a South African singer, dancer and record producer whose energetic performances and viral hits helped shape the amapiano movement. He rose to national prominence with the chart-topping songs “Tholukuthi Hey” and “Amaneighbour,” becoming one of the genre’s most recognisable young stars.
Early Life and Musical Roots
Born and raised in Soweto, Killer Kau’s musical journey began in church, where he developed his vocal ability and stage confidence. He sang baritone in the Stay PC Church Choir and later joined the African Heavenly Soul Singers, a respected male choir that further sharpened his discipline and musical foundation.
While still in school, Hlatshwayo began writing and recording his own music. In 2017, the same year he completed matric, his career gained momentum after he posted a video performing “Tholukuthi Hey” on social media. The clip quickly went viral, attracting widespread attention and earning recognition from established industry figures, including DJ Euphonik.
Breakthrough and Success
Killer Kau’s sound blended amapiano rhythms with bold vocals and distinctive dance moves, making him a favourite both on streaming platforms and live stages. His performances were known for their high energy, helping him stand out in a rapidly growing and competitive genre.

Tragic Death
On 9 August 2021, Killer Kau died in a car accident while travelling to a performance. The crash also claimed the lives of fellow amapiano artist Mpura and emerging musicians The Voice, Thando Tot, and Thando Td. One passenger survived the accident. The tragedy sent shockwaves through the South African music industry, prompting tributes from fans, artists and cultural figures nationwide.

Despite his short career, Killer Kau left a lasting mark on amapiano culture. He is remembered not only for his hit songs but for his vibrant personality, dance-driven performances and role in bringing township-born amapiano to mainstream audiences.
