UMG, Roblox agree strategic partnership to expand music integrations
Universal Music Group (UMG) and gaming platform Roblox have announced a new strategic agreement aimed at expanding music, merchandise and commercial integrations across artist and fan experiences.
UMG executive vice-president and chief digital officer Michael Nash.
Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on tools designed to increase engagement and revenue opportunities for artists and labels on Roblox. This includes the introduction of commercial features that allow creators to sell both digital and physical merchandise through Shopify. The partnership also seeks to streamline how artists and labels work within the platform, offering direct operational support and access to new Roblox tools and beta features.
Both companies said the collaboration is guided by a shared commitment to responsible artificial intelligence practices and the protection of intellectual property. The agreement is intended to ensure that artists represented by UMG can use their work confidently while engaging with emerging platform technologies.
“UMG’s strategic relationship with Roblox is built on shared objectives of promoting innovation, empowering artists and deepening fan engagement,” UMG executive vice-president and chief digital officer Michael Nash said. “With this new framework, we are strengthening our commercial, creative and operational collaboration and unlocking new opportunities for our artists and labels.”
Nash added that the agreement coincides with preparations for the launch of UMG’s flagship “Tastemaker” experience on Roblox, which he described as part of the company’s wider efforts to develop music experiences in immersive digital environments.
Roblox chief business officer Enrico D’Angelo said the agreement formalises and expands previous collaborations. “We have worked closely with Universal Music Group over the years to bring some of their top artists to Roblox to engage with next-generation fans in innovative and creative ways,” he said. “This strategic agreement represents a major step forward in building the future of immersive entertainment.”
As part of the rollout, UMG is set to introduce a series of artist activations on the platform in the coming months, beginning with an experience featuring K-pop group Stray Kids, signed to JYP Entertainment and Republic Records.
UMG has previously launched several initiatives on Roblox, including Beat Galaxy, a curated music discovery space introduced in 2023, and Boombox, developed with Styngr, which enabled licensed music streaming within gaming experiences.
Roblox has increasingly positioned itself as a space for music-related fan engagement, hosting virtual experiences and events involving artists such as Yeat, Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan, Glass Animals and Sofi Tukker.
