Bio
TikTok is a highly popular social media platform for creating and uploading video content. TikTok was founded by the Chinese company ByteDance and was originally known as Douyin. In 2017, it officially launched internationally as TikTok. The company has offices across the world, but its main base of operations is in Los Angeles, Singapore, and California.
Zhang Yiming is the founder of ByteDance and TikTok. Shou Zi Chew is the current CEO. The Singaporean has held the position since 2021. TikTok is a top social media platform with a projected 1.9 billion monthly active users by the end of 2025.
TikTok's mission is to "inspire creativity and bring joy". Its vision is to be the world's leading destination for short-form mobile videos, where everyone can be a creator and where creativity, knowledge, and life moments are captured and shared.
The parent company, ByteDance, is currently embroiled in a major legal dispute with the United States government regarding the transfer of ownership of the social media platform. The U.S government is concerned about national security and the potential for the Chinese government to access user data or influence content. A law was passed requiring the sale of the U.S. operations to an American entity, or face a ban, but enforcement is currently delayed by executive order as a sale is negotiated.
