Fenny Dembo
Bio
Fenestia “Fenny” Dembo is a Zimbabwean singer, songwriter and performer who carries forward the legacy of her father, the late sungura music icon Leonard Dembo. His work, including the internationally recognised hit Chitekete, shaped her early understanding of music and exposed her to the power of African storytelling through song.
Raised in a household immersed in melody and rhythm, Fenny developed an appreciation for the cultural depth and emotional honesty at the heart of sungura. Her father’s influence provided the foundation for her own artistic path, inspiring her to create music that honours her heritage while embracing contemporary expression.
Fenny has become known for her heartfelt interpretations and modern reworkings of her father’s classics. Her performances introduce sungura to younger audiences while preserving the genre’s distinctive spirit. By blending nostalgia with a fresh, contemporary approach, she has earned recognition from listeners across the region.
Now based in South Africa, Fenny continues to build her career with a sound that remains grounded in her roots. Her soulful, commanding voice reflects both respect for tradition and an openness to the evolving landscape of African music. Through her work, she maintains the Dembo legacy while establishing her own identity as an artist committed to cultural connection, unity and musical excellence.
As she releases new material and performs across borders, Fenny aims to bridge generations through music, honouring the past, engaging the present and contributing to a lasting artistic legacy.
