Bio

Lihle (born Thembelihle Dunjana) is a soulful artist from Cape Town, South Africa.

Lihle graduated from the University of Cape Town with a bachelor's degree in music: jazz performance. She began playing piano at the age of 11. Lihle has performed alongside such South African artists as Msaki, Mark Fransman and Frank Paco. Lihle has performed at the Cape Town Jazz and Oslo Jazz festivals.

In 2017, Lihle founded the iGugu band alongside her friends. iGugu is a sextet group that was created under the yearning of wanting to harness young voices that are slowly impacting the resurgence of live music and jazz in South Africa. The group was formed with the intention of reshaping the narrative of love, race and identity among the youth through composition and storytelling in music and performance.

IGugu pays homage to township streets that challenge the current state of consciousness and awareness, through music and lyricism. The band is a combination of young, fresh instrumentalists and vocalists who are inspired within their own rights to move and change the world.

IGugu's sound is a mixture of African American hard bop style, South African jazz and soul music. The band's sound was influenced by Mccoy Tyner and Moses Molelekwa. IGugu is an extension of Lihle’s story through the interpretation of her trusted peers. In 2019, the band was selected in the Top 10 espAfrika Young Legends competition.

“In my band, I always strive for openness, for musicians to be themselves, so we can fully collaborate, when there are no limits or boundaries, there is room for so much creativity and the birth of new things,” Lihle says.
