Sandra Nankoma
Bio
Sandra Nankoma is an Afro-soul musician from Uganda.
Nankoma’s vocals cover the musical baselines of Jazz and Soul ballads with a distinctive identity and air that breaks the codes of traditional African soul singers. A graduate of fine arts, the author, composer, and performer, made her stage debut at the Bayimba Festival in 2013 before sharing stage with notable artists such as Grammy Award Winner Skyler Jett, Goefrey Oryema, Kareyce Fotso, Maurice Kirya, amongst others.
In 2017, Nankoma was Awarded Best Artist out of Africa and the Caribbean for the acclaimed Visa Pour la Creation and spent a three-month residency in Paris developing her debut album, Ye’nze. While in Paris, Nankoma also collaborated with French artists like L’Artiste on "rose et lepine" and David felgeirolles on Mercedes and It's Alright, performed at her Maiden concert in France at La Cite des Arts International and MaMa Festival at Centre Barbra.
In 2018, Nankoma was double nominated in the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA for “Best Female Artiste in African Inspirational Music” and “Best Female Artiste in Eastern Africa” for her song “Kaddugala.” The anthem for dark skinned girls to love their skin tone and reject skin bleaching, she took home the continental award for “Best Female Artiste in African Inspirational Music.”
Convinced that music is the vehicle for social change, she engages her art in order to contribute to her society, especially to the cause of women and girls. Her commitment against discrimination and xenophobia is particularly evident through the listening of her first solo album Ye’nze and through her "Kaddugala" Campaign to fight against Bleaching and Colorism, this campaign has thus far acclaimed global recognition on different international platforms like BBC Focus on Africa, Tv5Monde France and several African forums and conferences for women.
Nankoma is currently recording her second album dubbed 'The Black Dame’ a tribute to the African Women that have paved way in the music industry for many but have not been celebrated or archived in the entertainment world and these go as far as music producers, instrumentalists and writers. The Album is set to be released in November 2020, gladly be on the anticipation. Nankoma believes that it's an artist duty to reflect the times.
