James Kuchilala

Bio

Born on 16 July, 1985, James Kuchilala is a music artist from Blantyre, Malawi. His passion for music began at the age of 15. In 2013, he released his debut album titled 'Tsogolo' (Future). The music project is a fusion of Afro-jazz and Malawian traditional music genres. His type of music was prompted by the relationship he had with a number of artists when he was a session artist.

The album was well-received and earned him a household name in the country's entertainment industry. A song from his album won the 2014 music competition organized by the UN Women in Malawi under the theme “Eradicating Violence Against Women and Children.” This was followed by an invitation to perform with an Irish Band in Blantyre during the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Besides music, he is a teacher at Blantyre Secondary School. He also established a music club where he teaches basics of music to the underprivileged students who might not have that rare opportunity of getting into a formal music class but have the potential to successfully achieve the best through art.

In 2005, he went to the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education majoring in Music and History.
