P-Square
Bio
Peter and Paul Okoye, are identical twin brothers, who perform as a duo named P-Square . Their music career started as students of St. Mulumba Secondary School in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria where they were members of the Music and Drama group. They modelled their acts on Michael Jackson and MC Hammer, influences that remain in their music, dance routines and costume today.
In 1999, they returned to music school to develop their instrumental skills, becoming proficient on some instruments. In 2001 they won the "Grab Da mic" competition, sponsored by Benson and Hedges, launching their career. They recorded 'Last Nite' and shot the video for 'Senorita'. The video, which had the brothers performing dance steps in the style of American R&B artists, became a sensation. The success of the video and album marked P-Square as potential pop stars. At the time they were under the management of artiste manager Bayo 'Howie Tee' Odusanmi.
Months after the release of their 'Last Nite', P-Square was nominated for a Kora Award in the Best New Artist category.
The duo's second album, 'Get Squared' was released under their own Square Records. 'Get Squared' further cemented their international reputation, with heavy airplay on then new MTV Base. The group's penchant for upmarket videos fit in with the new music station's aesthetic.
'Game Over,' third album from the group, became their biggest selling album, with a claimed over 8 million copies sold worldwide. It secured the band's place in contemporary African music.
In 2009, now managed and produced by brother Jude 'Engees' Okoye, the duo released fourth album 'Danger'.
The duo continue to tour all over the world. And recently topped a richest musician list in Nigeria. The group has deals with Universal Music and Akon's Konvict Label.
As a sign of P-Square's success, the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards nominated the group for its 'Evolution' Award, presented to an artist who has influenced the continent. Although P-Square lost out in that category, the group received both the Best Group and Artist of the Decade awards.
