Urban Hype

Urban Hype is a two-member music group based in Lusaka, Zambia. The music ensemble started off with Lweendo Mweemba (Thee Ajay) and Roy Zulu (Prince Roy). They started way back in December, 2011. It began as an idea among three college friends in a dormitory at Zambia’s Center for Accountancy Studies. The duo would often download instrumentals and do rap practices just for the fun. They later met a producer known as F Jay (real name Fumbani Changaya) who started grooming them and helped them record their first single called ‘How Do I Tell You’. The song featured Thugga (Zone Fam).

This was followed by their second single ‘Slow Wind’ which features F Jay. F Jay later helped Urban Hype get signed to So’Good Entertainment where they met Badman Shapi (real name Reuben Sakala). Shapi featured on the ‘Slow Wind’ remix and this worn him a ticket of joining the group. The three recorded their first official radio single ‘Anything You Want’ which features Zambian dancehall legend T Boy. The song was an instant hit and it officially announced the arrival of Urban Hype on the Zambian music scene. Prince Roy left the group for personal reasons. Thee Ajay and Badman Shapi continued and released a single titled ‘Freezer’.

In 2013, they released a single titled ‘Chimbilimbili’. The song made waves in the country and Kenya and they were awarded a contract from Kenyan based music label Taurus Musik.

In 2015, they won a ZeeMusic award in the Best Group category and the Born & Bred Award for Best RnB Video category. They were also nominated at the Zambian Music Award in the Best New Artist category.

They have collaborated with big African names such as Nigeria’s Sasha P & YemiAlade, South Africa’s HHP and working alongside names like Zambia’s JK, Thee Ajay, F Jay and Bad Man Shapi.
