West Africans take top 3 spots in 2020 AfriMusic Song Contest

Dhortune ThatOndoBoy came tops with 6.5 points and 315 314 votes. Following in second is fellow Nigerian artist Zinny with 6.5 points and 22 243 votes. Ghana’s EpiqMenz took third with 5.5 points and 255 317 votes. Presss (South Africa) and Crank (Kenya) are in third and fourth place, respectively.

The organisers of the annual competition said that this year’s competition was challenging with entries from 29 African countries and 113 songs competing in the national selections.

“We have seen an amazing global reach, where votes from countries such as Brazil, Mexico, America, Canada, Australia, Russia, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Sweden, France and many more, were received in supported their favourite AfriMusic contestant,” AfriMusic Song Contest co-founder and co-CEO Suzie Vicente said.

AfriMusic Song Contest co-founder and co-CEO Michelle Fernandes said: “This year has been no exception, despite the global restraints the world is currently facing, with the COVID-19 pandemic. Sadly, Eurovision 2020 has been cancelled, along other major events around the world, so plans for AfriMusic in 2020 have be halted. We have a few other announcements to make in the coming weeks, despite the global lockdown and we look forward to sharing them with our fans and partners soon.”

The winner of the pan-African music competition was to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest was planned to take place from 12 to 16 May.
