The award was presented at the Ziyakhala Mo Sun City Festival, where the legendary group was celebrated for their enduring influence on traditional music both locally and globally. Formed in the late 1950s, Ladysmith Black Mambazo rose from the hills of KwaZulu-Natal to become one of the country’s most internationally acclaimed music groups, known for their signature harmonies and cultural storytelling.
“Today, we stand humbled and honoured,” Sibongiseni Tshabalala, son of the group’s late founder, Joseph Shabalala, said. “Ukhozi FM celebrated us for the role we’ve played in nurturing and growing umculo wesintu, our indigenous music. From the hills of Ladysmith to stages across the world, we’ve carried the sounds of our ancestors with pride. Thank you, Ukhozi FM, for this beautiful recognition.”
The group was honoured alongside other acclaimed South African artists including Dr Nothembi Mkhwebane, Ringo Madlingozi, and Makhadzi, who delivered stirring performances as part of the festival’s line-up.
Marking their 65th anniversary, Ladysmith Black Mambazo are currently embarking on a milestone tour that includes stops in South Africa and abroad. Following the completion of their recent tour across the United States and a successful Johannesburg performance earlier this year, the group is now set to bring their distinctive sound to audiences in Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg.
The anniversary tour, which will continue throughout 2025, is expected to conclude in December with a grand finale performance.
In addition to their South African dates, the group will also take their show across the African continent, with scheduled appearances in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya, offering fans a rare opportunity to witness their legendary stage presence live.
