Spotify South Africa turns one
Music streaming platform Spotify on Wednesday celebrated its first anniversary since launching its services in South Africa.
Spotify’s anniversary was marked with the release of its maiden top 10 list of local artists who were streamed the most by South African audiences since launching in March 2018. Nasty C tops the list and is followed by Black Coffee, AKA, Snotkop and Goldfish.
The Swedish streaming platform also released a top 10 list of local tracks. Sitting at No 1 is Black Coffee and David Guetta's ‘Drive’ featuring Delilah Montagu, which amassed more than 25 million worldwide streams. Lady Zamar’s ‘Collide’ is at No 2 while AKA’s ‘Fela In Versace’ is in third.
“Let’s celebrate our first birthday in style. The top 50 tracks from your first year, specially curated into one playlist,” a post on Spotify's Facebook page says.
Reflecting on the past year, Spotify managing Middle East and Africa director Claudius Boller said: “Our first year in South Africa has been extremely exciting and we have been thrilled by the response from music fans. Our launch in South Africa – our first African market – gave us the opportunity to offer local music fans access to a world of new music and genres as well as giving local artists the opportunity to connect with a global audience of music fans on Spotify.
“We've had a fantastic first year in South Africa and want to thank all artists, labels and music fans who have been on the journey with us so far. We are very excited about what the future holds.”
Meanwhile, in what seems like a wily marketing ploy, YouTube Music launched its services in South Africa on the same day as Spotify's first anniversary celebrations.
