Spotify jumps onto Google’s .new domain
Spotify has registered a Google '.new' domain following yesterday's announcement that the service is now available to other organisations.
The new Spotify ‘playlist.new’ and ‘podcast.new’ domains, which work like a shortcut, will allow users to quickly add songs to a new playlist or create a new podcast on the music streaming app, respectively.
Their purpose is to get users straight to the action that they would like to perform. Instead of having to navigate to a website, sign in and search for their desired function, typing the .new domain will enable users to start creating immediately.
This announcement comes after Google launched the service last year, exclusively for the company, and allowed users to create a new Google Doc or spreadsheet by simply typing ‘doc.new’ or ‘sheet.new’ in a web browser.
Any company can now register a .new domain to generate a shortcut that will work with its web app.
Drake’s record label, OVO Sound, beat YouTube Music to secure the ‘music.new’ shortcut, which will allow users to create song artwork.
Other companies that have registered .new domains include eBay with ‘sell.new’, Canva with ‘design.new’ and Bitly with ‘link.new’, among others.
This service saves users a lot of time and improves the workflow in companies that deal with copious amounts of content and documents.
Google says all the domains are secured over HTTPS connections like its .app and .dev domains.
However, the service may require some reworking, as it may not function as well with other domains as it does with Google, which usually has users signed into their Google accounts for long periods of time.
Trademark owners will be given a chance to register their .new domains first, after which any company can register for a limited time, starting from 2 December until 14 January 2020.
