Sony Music Publishing opens Nigeria office
Sony Music Publishing (SMP) has announced new operations in Lagos, Nigeria, with industry expert Godwin Tom named as managing director.
The move forms part of the company’s expansion efforts across Africa.
Before joining SMP, Tom was the head of iManage Africa, a talent agency that saw him work with African stars such as Wizkid and Davido. He also led the Music Business Academy (MBA) for Africa talent management training programme and music business education initiative.
In his new role, Tom is expected to deepen SMP’s reach in the region while supporting its growing roster of songwriters and composers, firming up relations with stakeholders across Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa. He will report to Guy Henderson, president of SMP, international.
“I am honoured and humbled by the opportunity to work for the number one music publisher in the world,” Tom said. “Africa has so much talent, culture and uniqueness to share with the rest of the world and I am excited to be a part of the incredible global network of teams that will help build a home for Africa’s best songwriters.”
“It is a real pleasure to be able to announce the appointment of Godwin Tom as the managing director of our start-up company in Nigeria,” Henderson said. “As Sony Music Publishing enters West Africa, Godwin’s wealth of experience and knowledge of the market, as well as his background in music industry education make him the perfect leader for our business.
“Together with our talented team in South Africa, Sony Music Publishing looks forward to an ongoing acceleration in its global African footprint.”
