Somizi, Dineo Ranaka and Mpho Popps to host SA Music Awards
South African choreographer and radio personality Somizi Mhlongo will host the 24th edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) at Sun City in the North West province on 2 June.
Somizi, who starred in the 1992 South African film Sarafina!, returns for a record third time as host. He will be joined by radio personality Dineo Ranaka and comedian Mpho Popps to steer the televised spectacle.
“We are going all out to ensure that SAMA 24 is a dazzling experience,” Recording Industry of South Africa CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said. “As the most credible and premier music awards show in the land, we have to keep up the standards, and the hosting team is proof that we have secured only the finest and best our country has to offer. We believe Somizi, Dineo and Mpho will hit all the right notes and leave us entertained.”
The North West department of culture, arts and traditional affairs commended the SAMAs for roping in the three celebrities.
"We are pleased that SAMA 24 has managed to secure the services of such high-calibre individuals to host such an important event in the calendar of the arts in South Africa," department spokesperson Shuping Sebolecwe said. "We are convinced that these personalities will enhance the entertainment element of the show and make it all the more memorable."
Somizi has appeared in various television shows, such as Living the Dream With Somizi, I Am and Idols SA. He was recently the centre of attention Comedy Central's Roast of Somizi.
“The combination of Somizi, who is known to shoot from the hip with his sharp wit, and the charismatic Dineo’s appeal, plus the comedic timing of Mpho Popps, is sure to deliver the perfect backdrop of fun and laughter on local music’s biggest night in the Sun City Superbowl,” the SAMAs said.
Ranaka, who featured on e.tv lifestyle and music entertainment show Club 808, has been a radio jock for many years, while Popps is one of the new faces on the South African comedy scene. In 2013, he competed in the sixth season of reality TV show Strictly Come Dancing.
The SAMA24 will be broadcast live on SABC 1 at 8pm.
