The track, produced by ANTII and recorded in Cape Town, has already attracted attention following the circulation of early previews on social media. Online discussion has centred on Lucasraps’ verse, with some listeners interpreting it as a response to tensions involving fellow South African artists Blxckie and Kindlynxsh, although these claims have not been confirmed by the artists.
The release comes at a time of heightened visibility for South African hip-hop, with digital platforms continuing to amplify both collaboration and rivalry within the scene.
JP Keller has previously worked with South African artists including Emtee and Priddy Prince. His latest collaboration continues his pattern of cross-border projects aimed at expanding his presence in international markets.
Lucasraps, regarded as one of the more prominent voices in his generation of South African hip-hop, delivers a featured verse that has contributed to anticipation ahead of the official release.
Keller said the track reflects the competitive nature of contemporary rap. “There’s a certain kind of authority that can’t be manufactured. It’s lived, it’s earned, and it echoes long after the moment has passed,” he said.
The single is expected to be released across major streaming platforms on 10 April. Industry observers suggest the collaboration could attract attention in both the United States and South African markets due to the artists’ respective followings.
‘CAN NEVER BE ME’continues a trend of increased collaboration between American and African hip hop artists, as global streaming platforms facilitate cross-market releases and wider audience reach.
