SA: Fête de la Musique Joburg postponed to September
The 2021 edition of Fête de la Musique in Johannesburg, South Africa, has been rescheduled from 19 June to September due to COVID-19 concerns.
This is according to a statement by the organisers who arrived at the decision due to a third wave of COVID-19 in the country.
“After receiving the highest amount of entries in Fête de la Musique’s history in South Africa, organisers have decided to postpone the event due to the third wave of COVID-19,” they said. “Fête de la Musique will happen when it is safer to stage music festivals, keeping its promise of safety while enjoying entertainment.”
French embassy cultural attaché Selen Daver said: “September is the new target for Fête de La Musique. The Fête is now a recognised event of the musical agenda in Johannesburg and it is here to stay.”
The organisers will on 21 June (World Music Day) announce the full line-up of artists ahead of the event in September.
“The 334 applications received in one week is a strong sign of this. The quality of entrants has been very strong and we look forward to announcing the 14 amazing acts who have been chosen to perform at Fête de la Musique 2021.”
Fête de la Musique was founded by former French minister of arts and culture Jack Lang and French composer and music journalist Maurice Fleuret in 1982. The festival is now celebrated in more than 120 countries around the world.
Artists who have performed at Fête de la Musique in Johannesburg include Samthing Soweto, Vaudou Game, Nakhane, BLK JKS, Urban Village, BCUC and Msaki.
