SA: Fête de la Musique announces 2019 headliners
French artists DJ Monique and The Dark Blue Orchestra will headline the 2019 edition of Fête de la Musique in Johannesburg on 8 June.
The event is made possible by the French Institute of South Africa, Alliance Française and Bassline Live as well as various sponsors and partners including Total South Africa.
The French acts will be joined by Jackie Queens (Zimbabwe), Deltino Guerreiro (Mozambique) and Grace Attalie (DRC). Confirmed local acts include Darkie Fiction, Tidal Waves, Msaki, PG_13, Refentse Solo, Red Robyn and Urban Village.
“For me the curation was always good,” Msaki who was present at the press briefing told Music In Africa. “I have seen interesting artists who have been part of this festival and it's an honour to be part of it. I will perform with a trio including myself. I hope I'll be able to convince Urban Village to collaborate with me at the festival because we have done something before.”
The French Institute's head of culture, Corinne Verdier, said: “Fête de la Musique is an amazing adventure for everyone involved. For us, for the artists, for our partners and sponsors, we all share one common goal: to put on a really fun and free music festival with that unique French flair. We also want to promote this new generation of wonderful artists.”
Verdier told Music In Africa that the organisers would announce more artists to complete a line-up 20 bands that would perform on six stages. “We expect thousands of people to come and enjoy all types of music. Music will range from classical, rock, hard rock, rap, or anything,” Verdier said.
Total South Africa corporate communications and marketing manager Reina Cullinan said the oil company was happy to be a major sponsor of the event once again.
“I am personally always excited to attend Fête de la Musique and see some of the new creative talent that South Africa has to offer,” she said. “One of Total South Africa’s focus areas in the social development space is heritage, which encompasses the arts in its totality, from drama to speech, dance, music and the creative arts.
“It is therefore not by default that we have partnered with our friends to deliver the diverse music genres you find at the fete. Total South Africa recognises that arts and culture are powerful tools to engage communities on various levels of change.”
