SA: Constitution Hill Human Rights Festival unveils 2025 dates
26 Feb 2025 - 10:00
This year’s Constitution Hill Human Rights Festival will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 20 to 23 March.
Now in its seventh edition, the event will run under theme: A Just and Inclusive South Africa, to reflect on the country’s struggles and global human rights crises, calling for solidarity in the fight for justice.
The festival’s key highlight is the Sounds of Freedom music festival on 22 March, featuring celebrated jazz artist Mandisi Dyantyis, alongside local DJs Kedineo, Buhle Mbongwa, and Simmy.
“This festival is an essential platform to foster dialogue, raise awareness, and drive societal change towards a culture rooted in dignity, respect, and equality,” GBVF Response Fund interim CEO Zanele Ngwepe said.
The event will also feature a range of activities, including a book fair, children’s village, film screenings, workshops, and public dialogues. The final day will culminate in the 8km WeThePeople Walk, an event encouraging South Africans to stand together for human rights.
The organisers have also emphasised the importance of community participation, with free entry for public events from 20 to 22 March. Tickets for the WeThePeople Walk, available on Webtickets, including a free t-shirt for the first 5 000 adults registered. Children under 17 can participate for free.
The event, established in 2014, continues to commemorate South Africa’s Human Rights Day and honour those who fought for justice during the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960. Acting CEO Siyabonga Hlongwane described the festival as a crucial space for South Africans to engage in discussions about the country’s challenges and explore solutions rooted in human rights and social justice.
The 1000 Drums for Solidarity activity, introduced last year, will again form part of the festival’s official opening.
