Notting Hill Carnival 2022: Boomplay named lead sponsor of Afrobeats Corner
Africa-facing music streaming platform Boomplay is partnering with events outfits R70, GI Roadshow and DJA Media for the Boomplay Afrobeats Corner at the 2022 Notting Hill Carnival in London, UK, on 29 August.
Running since the mid-1980s, the carnival makes a return this year following a hiatus due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously called the Nigerian Corner, the Boomplay Afrobeats Corner will focus on providing an African experience celebrating Afrobeats.
The move forms part of Boomplay’s vision to empower the African music ecosystem to unlock its full potential, promoting and introducing the genre to new audiences. It also follows Boomplay’s recent collaboration with filmmaker Ayo Shonaiya to produce the Afrobeats: The Backstory documentary, which recently premiered on Netflix.
Hosted by DJ Abass and hype man Adesope, the Boomplay Afrobeats Corner will feature an array of displays and performances promoting African music. Carnival-goers will also be able to unlock unique audio content and merchandise while being exposed to a catalogue of African sounds.
“We’re proud of the waves African talents are making within and outside the continent, and Afrobeats is one of those arrowheads pushing the African sound that Boomplay has always supported,” Boomplay director for artist and media relations Tosin Sorinola said.
Sorinola added: “[This is] yet another opportunity to support and promote African artists and their content, a mission Boomplay is committed to achieving.”
According to event manager Peju Oshoffa of R70, this year's event will be “a fitting tribute to the Afrobeats phenomenon, and we are glad to have Boomplay on board as the lead sponsor.”
