Nigeria: Akinyemilaw Song Challenge announces winners
The winners of the Akinyemilaw Song Challenge in Nigeria were announced at the weekend, with King Marky Moore taking first place in the Songwriting category.
The contest is organised by lawyer and entrepreneur Akinyemi Ayinoluwa and powered by his GreySage Consulting company, which also runs the GreySage Songwriting Contest. It was held solely on Instagram with a vision of empowering the next generation of Nigerian songwriters and producers. The winners were picked by music consultant Obinna Agwu, who served as the competition’s judge.
A native of Anambra State, King Marky Moore began his professional music career in 2014. He experiments with a variety of sounds, most notably highlife and Afribeats, and names Fela, 2Baba, Onyeka Oweni and Wizkid as his idols. King Marky Moore beat off competition from Samuel Ademuyiwa, who placed second in the competition, and won about $150. Ademuyiwa took home $100 for his efforts.
The winning beatmakers are The Wizard and Teezy Beatz, who also took home $150 and $100 respectively.
The winning songwriters and beatmakers, as well as six other finalists, will get a free pass to Ayinoluwa’s upcoming webinar on copyright for music creators.
“This is one of the many great things we will be doing to help build Nigeria’s songwriting community,” Ayinoluwa said. “The ultimate legacy is to help build an environment that allows the next generation of creatives to thrive and have a more prosperous adventure.”
