Cat out of the bag: Black Sherif bags BET Hip Hop Award
In what seems to be a leaked video from the recording of the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards, Ghanaian musician Black Sherif has won the Best International Flow Award. The event was held in Atlanta, US, on 3 October, but the winners are only supposed to be revealed when the awards show airs officially on 10 October.
Black Sherif apparently beat Zambia’s Sampa the Great, the late South African rapper AKA and South African hip hop artist K.O to take home the award. The other nominees in the category are J Hus (UK), Central Cee (UK), Gazo (France), Major RD (Brazil), Ninho (France) and Tasha & Tracie (Brazil).
Black Sherif, who is behind the chart-topping debut album The VIllain I Never Was (2022), joins an esteemed list of Best International Flow winners including fellow Ghanaian act Sarkodie, British-Ghanaian rapper Stormzy and British-Nigerian rapper Little Simz.
Now in their 17th edition, the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards are celebrating 50 years of of hip hop. Heading into the awards, Nigeria’s Burna Boy led Africa’s nominees with seven nods, making him the third-most nominated act. He is up for Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Hip Hop Video, Best Collaboration, Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year and Hustler of the Year.
