Call for registration: Free music business workshop in SA
Drakensberg Promotions is calling on all music industry stakeholders to register for a free business workshop taking place at Sammy Marks Square in Pretoria, South Africa, on 24 August.
The event will be facilitated by top industry professionals and acts as a build-up to the annual Moretele Park Tribute Concert in Pretoria on 31 August. The facilitators will represent such organisations as the Southern African Music Right Organisation (SAMRO), the Independent Music Performing Rights Association (IMPRA) and the Association of Independent Record Companies (AIRCO), among others.
The workshop will delve into the state of the music industry, the live music scene, music business operations, event production, royalties and the latest trends in the music industry.
“The workshop aims to impart business skills to musicians and music business practitioners,” Drakensberg Promotions director Sam Mangwane said. “We have seen high-profile artists dying poor despite their immense talent. We see this as a step in the right direction towards changing the lives of the local musicians and artists.”
The convener of the workshop, Victor Mampane, said: “We will discuss various careers in the music industry that are behind the scenes but crucial to the success of recording artists, songwriting, rights administration – such as performing, mechanical and needletime rights – business management, publishing, recording, performances and the protection of intellectual property rights, all with a view to enhance income streams.
“We want to create an after-effect that is meaningful for artists. The workshop should assist them in developing their skills and empower them in their future endeavours.”
The workshop will start at 9am and end at 2pm. To register, interested individuals should contact Hlengiwe at drakensberg1@telkomsa.net or call her on 011 482 4973.
