Call for registration: Concerts SA workshops in Durban, Cape Town and Joburg
Concerts SA is inviting musicians, venue owners, music promoters, stakeholders and arts sector representatives to register for its workshops in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg, in South Africa on 16, 20 and 23 June, respectively.
Titled The Future of Music: Live or Digital, the workshops will be held at KZNSA Gallery Glenwood (Durban), A Touch of Madness Observatory (Cape Town) and Lekgotla Women’s Jail Constitution Hill (Johannesburg) from 2pm to 5pm. The topics to be discussed will include Introduction and Overview of the Concerts SA Project, Digital Futures 2 & CSA DMF 1-5 Data, Revenue Streams for Musicians and Keeping Venues and Music Events Alive.
The workshops will reflect on recent research studies by Concerts SA and the Music in Africa Foundation (MiAF) which explore the feasibility of online music streaming and the viability of different revenue streams for musicians in South Africa. There will also be a panel discussion on the current state of the live music scene with key industry players including musicians, promoters, venue managers and owners, with a focus on the survival of music venues and events in post-COVID SA.
Confirmed facilitators include IKS Cultural Consulting's Andre Le Roux and James French, local artist Natalie Rungan, musician and University of Stellenbosch lecturer and musician Felicia Lesch and postdoctoral research fellow at the Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair, University of South Africa, Dr Akhona Ndzuta. There will also be presentations from Music In Africa Foundation officials Eddie Hatitye (director) and Violet Maila (project manager).
Confirmed panellists include Marlijn Ntsele (iSupport Creative Business), Thulile Zama (vocalist and voice over artist), Thando Nyameni (KUMISA), Koko Nkalashe (Native Yard Arts), Gavin Minter (artist), Sol Shibambu (artist), Sibusile Xaba (artist), Gabi Le Roux (artist) and Niki Sondlo (Niki's Oasis Restaurant & Jazz Bar), among others.
The workshops will also feature networking sessions and a presentation by a Norwegian Embassy representative on their investment in Southern African live music.
