Call for applications: See Studio programme in Cape Town
The City of Cape Town is calling on Africans to apply for its See Studio programme to be held from 11 to 18 April.
The programme seeks to bring together people interested in history, memory and placemaking in Cape Town. It is a series of exchanges, expert presentations, tours, public engagements and publications.
Who should apply?
See Studio is open to all African musicians, artists, cultural practitioners, performance artists, poets, academics, activists, anthropologists, archaeologists, architects, art curators, community leaders, digital designers, economists, filmmakers, graphic designers, museum curators, media practitioners, social entrepreneurs, social geographers, theatre producers, urban designers, urbanists and the ‘general public’, the people who form the city, who use the streets, gather at public spaces and want the city to be made in their image.
How to apply
Interested applicants should submit the following information in PDF:
- Full name(s), email address, contact telephone number.
- CV (one page).
- Portfolio/ references to the applicant's work (two A4 pages).
- A reference letter from a mentor, lecturer or colleague (one A4 page).
- A motivational letter outlining why the applicant would like to participate in the City Making Studio and ways in which the applicant may contribute to the studio (one page).
- A response to the following quote by James Baldwin: “The great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it… history is literally present in all that we do” (100 words max).

Participation
- The city will provide a fee for participation, a workplace for the duration of the studio, a structured programme, professional supervision, a transport stipend and a contribution towards production and material costs (on request).
- Applicants must be available in Cape Town throughout the event.
- Participants will be paid for their participation in the studio and contribution to the See Studio project.
The submission deadline is 28 February.
“Participants in the studio will join us from Cape Town as well as places that have a connection to the city’s past and present including the Netherlands, India, Indonesia, Portugal and other parts of Africa,” the organisers said. “The studio will conclude with a weekend event where the work produced by participants will be presented and shared with the public, in alignment with COVID-19 protocol.”
