Call for applications: nAnA arts grants 2018
The British Council is inviting musicians to apply for the 2018 new Art new Audiences (nAnA) grant through which content creators will receive up to £30 000 ($40 000) to fund art projects in various disciplines.
The programme supports individual artists, artist collectives and arts organisations. It also provides artists with the opportunity to create new art and showcase to new audiences in East Africa and the UK.
The deadline for applications is 15 July (12am GMT) and the project begins on 1 November.
Who can submit an application?
This opportunity is open to applicants from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
- Applicants must be aged between 18 and 35. Proof of identification will be required for individuals as well as registration documents for companies and organisations.
- The project must be administrated by one person or organisation. They must have a bank account and a national ID to receive funds. They must also be responsible for the mid-project and end-of-project reports, and for the external communication of the project.
- Those who received nAnA 2016-17 grants are also encouraged to apply for the 2018 grant but not as the lead partner.
Project eligibility
- The project must involve three different countries with at least two countries from the East African region.
- Each project must focus on the creation of a new piece or a new body of art and must be connected to cities from the above mentioned countries.
- Each project must target audiences between 18 and 35 years old and engage them both online and face to face.
- All projects applied for must be completed within 12 months of receiving funds from the British Council.
- A mid-project report and an end-of-project report will be expected in order to receive payment. A template will be provided for these reports.
- There are no restrictions on art forms and themes for the project.
Financial Support
- Project payments will be made between September and October.
- nAnA will fund five new projects and applicants may request up £30 000 ($40 000)
- 70% of funds will be granted upon signing a contract with the British Council and the remaining 30% will be granted upon submitting the mid-project report.
- Projects can be match funded by other financial partners. Therefore partnerships are encouraged.
Selection criteria
When judging the applications, the shortlisting and interview panel will ask the following questions:
- Does this project propose the creation of exciting, innovative and contemporary new art?
- Is this new art being created and/or showcased through strong connections between artists, arts organisations and/or art collectives across the specified countries?
- How will this new art reach new online and face-to-face audiences in the UK and East Africa?
- What is the size of the audiences reached?
- What are the projected figures for audience numbers and are these figures realistic?
- Are the key contributors (administrators, producers, artists, organisers, managers and the applicant) of the project 18 to 35 year olds?
- Are the projects’ audiences predominantly 18 to 35 year olds?
- Is the budget clearly broken down, well researched and realistic?
Selection process

- Shortlisted applicants will be notified on 13 August.
- Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
- Skype interviews with shortlisted applicants will take place between 27 and 31 August.
- All shortlisted applicants that are unsuccessful will receive feedback on their applications upon request.
- Successful applicants will be announced on 17 September.
