Call for applications: MTNow new opera, musical theatre competition
The Music Theatre Now Network (MTNow), in cooperation with the German centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), is calling artists from around the world to apply for a competition for creators of new opera and musical theatre. MTNow accepts works that have been professionally created anywhere in the world between July 2015 and June 2018.
A jury of five internationally acclaimed musical theatre professionals will select 10 outstanding productions. The deadline for applications is 30 June. Click here to register.
“We are looking forward to groundbreaking works from all forms of professional opera and musical theatre,” MTNow said. “The jury welcomes submissions that demonstrate dynamism textually, in genre, score or staging.
“We welcome works made by opera and theatre institutions, works created by festivals or works created by individuals. The jury will appreciate a broad range of submissions that demonstrate new developments and dynamism.”
Applicants should take not of the following:
- Submission sessions that have been pending for more than three months will be automatically deleted.
- If you plan to submit more than one project, please make sure that you register each project individually, so the system will not confuse your session IDs.
- Your work must have premiered between July 2015 and June 2018.
- You can submit your work until 30 June.
- For each application an administration fee of €15 ($18.50) has to be paid. Otherwise the submission is not complete and will not be reviewed. Please scroll down for payment options and more information.
- You must provide a link to a video of the full show. Trailers are not accepted.
- Each submission will be integrated into the Music Theatre Now archive in Berlin and will be listed in the online database.
- Special attention will be given to works whose musical and theatrical vocabulary originates outside the Western-European tradition.
- As a guideline for regions where music theatre or opera are not well defined, we encourage interdisciplinary submissions, where music plays a dominant role.
