Call for applications: INHABIT arts research residency in Germany
International artist-in-residence programme INHABIT is accepting applications from visual and performing artists for 2021.
The residency, which will take place in Frankfurt, Germany over three three-month periods, was launched in 2019 by the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) – the only research institution in the world that is solely dedicated to interdisciplinary research on aesthetic perception and evaluation.
INHABIT seeks to foster the exchange between artists and scientists to enable new and challenging perspectives towards the research at the institute. MPIEA provides space and resources and thus facilitates an environment for experimentation, dialogue and collaboration.
The upcoming residency periods are:
- February – April 2021.
- May – July 2021.
- September – November 2021.
Applicants should:
- Be interested in the collaboration between the artistic and scientific fields and dedicate the residency period to research and the development of new work.
- Be open to sharing and developing the project in an exhibition, performance, or concert.
- Be active in contemporary culture and respond to the institute with innovative and challenging ideas.
- Be willing to meet weekly with the curatorial team to follow up and provide feedback.
Points to note:
- Applicants should be artists interested in cooperating with scientists from the humanities.
- Residents are expected to execute their project as a performance, exhibition or concert in cooperation with a local exhibition venue.
Selected applicants will receive the following:
- Artist’s fee worth €6 000 ($6 800).
- Accommodation fee worth €2 000.
- Production budget depending on the project.
- Technical and administrative support in the realisation of the final project.
- Travel costs to/from and in Frankfurt.
- Collaborations with scientists and researchers.
- Access to the institute’s library, sound studio and scientific facilities.
- Curatorial support during the residency.
Requirements
- CV.
- Artist’s statement (describing your practice, concepts, methods, etc.).
- A description of the proposed project that outlines potential connections with the work of the institute and the scientific interest (500 words max).
- A portfolio of your work.
- An indication of the residency periods for which you are available.
