Call for applications: Arts residency in Singapore
The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay performing arts centre in Singapore is inviting artists, curators, programmers, writers, researchers and practitioners across all disciplines in the performing arts to apply for its inaugural international Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency, which will place between April and June 2022.
The residency is a new artistic research development programme supported by the National Arts Council of Singapore. It seeks to support creative research in contemporary performing arts by providing its residents with the time and space for artistic inquiry, experimentation, development, research activities and opportunities for interdisciplinary and transcultural dialogues.
The residency welcomes various manners and methodologies of enquiry, embracing a pluralistic approach towards research that unfolds not only through the written word but also includes forms of experimentation with the body, performed moments and other non-traditional systems of knowledge.
All residents will receive either a stipend (for artists) or an allowance (for researchers), a shared-working space, studios when required, as well as accommodation and international travel to and from Singapore, if from abroad.
The performing arts centre offers two types of support:
Artists-in-Residence
Interested individuals can apply for a residency period of one to three months. The residency is open to artists who practice in contemporary performing arts at any stage of their career. The residency can accept applications from companies, ensembles, collectives, workgroups or duos but can only provide funding, workspace, airfare and accommodation (if from overseas) for one person. View the requirements here.
Researchers-in-Residence
Interested individuals can apply for a residency period of two to four weeks. The residency is open to curators, programmers, writers, researchers or practitioners whose work is focused on contemporary performing arts. View the requirements here.
Applicants will be selected by a panel comprising leading international curators, programmers, artists and managers who will also serve as interlocutors in the programme’s development and be available as consultants for all residents.
The application form is available here.
The application deadline is 31 May at 5.59pm CAT.
Note: There will be annual open calls for applications to the residency. Each cycle will revolve around a thematic focus conceived to respond to current critical issues in society. In 2022, the residency proposes the thematic focus, Potential Territorialities: Body, Space and Identity in Performance.
