Call for applications: 2019 Simba Arts training in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe's Simba Arts Ensemble is calling on musicians and dancers to submit applications for a performing arts and arts management training programme taking place in Mai Musodzi Community Hall in Mbare township, Harare, next year.
The programme takes place between February and November 2019 and is designed to focus on mbira and marimba music, folk and contemporary dance, music research and development, and innovative cultural exchange methods. The facilitators will comprise arts teachers from Zimbabwe and Norway.
Queries and applications should be sent via email to simbaarts@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is 31 January.
“We are inviting dancers, musicians and all physical movement practitioners from martial arts, physical theatre, circus and acrobatics aged between 21 and 30 to come and experience our intensive training programme,” Simba Arts co-founder Simbarashe Dzowa said.
“Unlike in the past, we also extend our call to interested young people outside Mbare. Participation in this programme is absolutely free but no chancers are welcome. We need honest and passionate artists.”
Dzowa said a number of the programme’s graduates would travel to the Bergen Afro Arts Festival in Norway as part of their graduation ceremony.
“At the end of the course, not only will you get a worldwide recognised certification as a performing artist but also a selected few will graduate on an international stage in Bergen, Norway, where they get exposed to vast opportunities while showcasing their talents. The number of people who will tour Norway depends on funding, but we normally go with between eight and 15 people.”
