Call for applications: 18th Street Center artist residency in the US
The 18th Street Arts Center invites all artists to apply for funding for its residency in Santa Monica, California.
Since it was founded in 1992, the visiting artist residency programme has hosted more than 500 artists from several countries around the world. There are four live and work studios at the centre, where artists will spend one to three months in residence.
Who should apply?
The programme is open to artists of all ages, nationalities and disciplines, including:
- Musicians.
- Writers.
- Curators.
How it works
- Funding for each residency is on a case-by-case basis.
- Many international artists have access to funding through their cultural ministries or other programmes, and 18th Street Arts Center works with artists to secure funding or encourage them to apply to cover the costs of the residency through various funding programmes.
- Artists may also choose to cover the basic costs of the residency themselves.
- The programme accepts applications from working, professional artists who demonstrate a deep commitment to their practices. It includes invited artists as well as artists selected through this application process.
- Each resident artist is provided with a fully furnished live and work studio apartment at the centre.
- Generally, the studios are booked a year to 18 months in advance of an artist’s arrival. However, opportunities may arise within a period of months if there is a sudden vacancy. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed quarterly.
- You will hear from the centre if your application is deemed a good fit for the programme.
How to apply
Applicants must submit the following materials via the online application form:
- Letter of interest.
- CV (PDF only).
- Work samples (digital files, PDFs, and website links are appropriate).
- Videos may be submitted as hyperlinks within the PDF. If you provided a website, the centre will consider that in addition to what you provide.
- Statement about funding support (one paragraph, identifying any funding bodies that artist is approaching to support the residency, or statement of fiscal responsibility by the artist).
- Additional materials may also be considered including an artist statement, press materials, letters of recommendation, and PDFs of catalogues or publications.
