Cairo Jazz Fest announces 2019 line-up
The Cairo International Jazz Festival has confirmed the artists who will play at its 11 edition from 10 to12 October.
Musicians from nine countries are expected to descend on the Egyptian capital. The American University in Cairo’s (AUC's) Tahrir Cultural Center will be the central hub of the festival. Performances will also take place at other venues such as the Cairo Jazz Club, Ewart Hall and Garden (AUC Tahrir campus), Darb 1718 and NWT.
The local line-up includes Circle of Four & Amena El Abd, Groove Ensemble, Wust El Balad, Sherif Mostafa Group, Yousra El Hawary, Eftekasat and Sahab. The Gypsy Jazz Project will perform pieces influenced by the melodies of Belgian-born guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stephane Grappelli.
Confirmed international acts include Aziz Maraka (Jordan), Mario Laginha Trio (Portugal), Lucerne Jazz Award recipients Fischermanns Orchestra (Switzerland) and Jeff Herr Corporation (Luxembourg). Others include Birds against Hurricanes (Austria), Livio Minafra (Italy), JU (Hungary), Sara Moullablad (Morocco) and Artvark & Drums United (Netherlands), who have collaborated with American jazz legend Peter Erskine, Senegalese drummer Doudou Rose and Danish rock band Efterklang.
Apart from the concerts, the festival will offer festivalgoers a photo contest as wel as jam and open-mic sessions. There will also be educational activities and music workshops for children aimed at providing an introduction to the art of jazz and its history.
The Cairo International Jazz Festival was launched by Egyptian musician Amro Salah in 2009. This year, the festival has been organised in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Cairo Jazz Club, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Austria Cultural Forum, Pro Helvetia and the National Cultural Fund of Hungary, among others.
