Burna Boy, Rema up for 2020 MTV Europe Music Award

The two were nominated in the Best African Act category alongside South African acts Master KG, Kabza de Small and DJ Maphorisa as well as Sheebah (Uganda), and Gaz Mawete (DRC).

“I strongly believe we’re gonna bring this home,” Rema said about his nomination, urging his fans to vote for him.

Both Burna Boy and Rema have enjoyed remarkable success in 2020. In August, Burna Boy’s latest album Twice As Tall debuted at No 1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. Two songs from the LP, ‘Real Life’ and ‘23’, also made it onto the Official Afrobeats Chart.

Rema is behind notable 2020 offerings including ‘Ginger Me’ and ‘Beamer (Bad Boys)’, which was listed recently among the official tracks for EA Sports’ FIFA 21 football video game. Signed to the Don Jazzy-led Mavin Records, Rema was named Apple Music’s Up Next artist in June.

The 2020 MTV EMAs are presented by ViacomCBS International Media Networks Europe and will be broadcast globally on MTV in 180 countries and territories. This year’s event will also take into consideration new content that has resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, including virtual live-stream performances.

Coveted awards up for grabs at this year’s ceremony are Best Pop, Best Video, Best Push, Best Hip Hop, Best Alternative, Best Virtual Live and Video for Good. Lady Gaga leads the nominations with seven nods, including Best Artist, Best Pop and Best Video. K-pop boy band BTS and Justin Bieber follow closely with five nominations each.
