Apple Music features SA's King Lutendo in May
South African rapper King Lutendo has been featured on Apple Music's New Artist Spotlight platform for the month of May.
The selection coincides with the April release of his nine-track album MAVU, which is available for pre-order on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. The album features such songs as ‘Thoho Khulu, Pt. 1’, ‘GONI’, ‘Her Needs’, ‘Sustain’, ‘Fhedza Vhothe’ and ‘RUN2ME’.
“MAVU is fuelled by a sense of folklore, his proudly Venda heritage and a focus on the path to self-realisation," a statement reads. "MAVU delves unabashedly into concepts of nobility and self-acceptance. “Keeping to traditional rhythms mixed with eccentric melodies and deep percussion it challenges many notions including identity, individual potential, meditation and rebirth.”
Born in Limpopo, King Lutendo is regarded as a poetic wordsmith whose style challenges the old rap formula approach by writing tracks ripe with authentic lyrics and beats. He says he wants to provide his listeners with intellectual and contemporary Afro-hip hop.
Other King Lutendo releases include the EPs 'Electric Jungle', 'Village Astrology' and 'Stylised Heaven', which blend tribal and traditional beats.
