Call for applications: International competition for composers in Spain
The Joan Guinjoan International Prize for Young Composers is calling on composers from around the world to submit scores for a competition in Barcelona, Spain, on 1 December.
The event, now in its 18th edition, was first initiated by the Catalonia College of Music, the only official centre of public initiative that grants a bachelor of music in the region.
The annual competition seeks to:
- Stimulate and support creativity among a new generation of composers by facilitating the performance of their prized compositions.
- Establish a framework for the creation of new works in a diversity of trends, styles and instrumental formations.
- Impel Catalonia as a promoter of culture and musical creations.
Interested participants below the age of 35 can submit up to two works that have previously not been published, premiered or commissioned.
The winning composer will receive €3 000 ($3 700) and the winning score will be premiered by the college with the chance to be professionally recorded.
The winner will be announced on 10 January.
The scores to be submitted should:
- Be 10 to 15 minutes long
- Be written for an open formation of six to 15 instruments, with optional electronics chosen from among those in an orchestra, piano, accordion, guitar, voice and jazz.
- Not have been performed in the educational context of conservatories and schools of music unless they have been retransmitted through the media or disseminated through networks in any channel or format such as YouTube, SoundCloud, etc.
Requirements
The composer should submit the following in PDF files and compressed in a single ZIP or RAR file:
- The full score.
- The inscription ballot.
- A copy of ID card (EU citizens) or passport.
The compressed file must be sent via WeTransfer or similar service at premi.guinjoan@esmuc.cat.
