Falz

Bio

Falz (real name Folarin Falana and also called Falz the Bahd Guy) is a Nigerian singer known for humorous songs. Before taking to music after acquiring a Law degree from the University of Reading, he attended primary and secondary schools in South-western states, Lagos and Osun in Nigeria.

Born to famous Nigerian lawyer-activist Femi Falana, Falz initially followed his dad’s footsteps by becoming a barrister after attending the Nigerian Law School. He soon changed directions by taking rapping, a secondary school hobby, seriously. Falz has said his father is very liberal and supported his turning to music, impressed with his son graduating from Law School while making music.

Among Falz’s influences are afrobeat maestro Fela Kuti, Trybesmen, an early Nigerian hip-hop group and pioneering Nigerian pop band Plantashun Boiz. These influences led him to release the mixtape Shakara (2009).

Wazup Guy (2011), High Class (2013) and Currency (2013) followed and by 2014 he released his debut album ‘Wazup Guy’. His music is a riff on the attitudes of young people in Nigeria, with easy to follow lyrics and a usually infectious chorus.

He sings in pidgin English, English and Yoruba and is signed to his own record label Bahdguy Records. (According to the singer, Bahd stands for Brilliant and Highly Distinct.)
