Call for registration: Dance workshop in Nairobi
Goethe-Institute Nairobi is calling on anyone interested in dance to register for a training workshop on 2 and 3 May 2019.
The Bodies Talk workshop is designed to engage dancers with and without disabilities and is open to the public. Participants will be engaged in dance training, conversations and performances.
“The main aim of the event is to keep contemporary dance and other conceptual art forms involving body movement lively, visible, accessible and relatable by way of dance and movement, workshops, critique, tech conversations, as well as performances,” Goethe-Institut said.
The sessions on 2 May will be facilitated by chorographer Doudou Saidi from the Democratic Republic of Congo with his piece Written and Reality and Kenya’s Pamoja Dance Group with Hii Piece Itachange (This Piece Will Change).
The sessions on 3 May will feature Kenya’s contemporary dancer and poet Adam Chienjo with his The Moon and Mirrors performance and the Origins Dance Company with Nairobi.
Pamoja Dance Group artistic director Joseph Kanyenje told Music In Africa that he hoped the workshops would challenge the audience to reflect upon how they view disability and performing artists.
“The Kenyan audience has always been supportive of our work,” he said. “We look forward to demonstrating how we manage to communicate different themes using different dance techniques. Our biggest challenge has always been getting financial support or strategic partnerships that can enable us to expand the company and accommodate more talents.”
The workshops are free and will run from 10am to 12.30pm. Interested individuals can register by sending an email to info@nairobi.goethe.org.
Performances will run 6.30 pm to 10pm and early-bird tickets are going for 400 Kenyan shillings ($4), while tickets at the door are 500 shillings ($5).
