Nigeria's Olumireggae releases video for 'Asanwa'
Nigerian singer Olumireggae has released a new single.
Titled 'Asanwa', the song takes its title from the Igbo word for "pretty girl" and features pop act Sammy.S. It is Olumireggae's first single of 2019.
Born Obi Helen Adaobi in Lagos, Nigeria, Olumireggae is now based in Italy, where she founded the record label OHAC. Her new song is performed in Igbo language and was written by Olumireggae herself and Sammy.S, with DJ Freshmike receiving production credit.
The song, says Olumireggae, was inspired by Igbo pop and highlife artist Flavour and 1980s' star Bright Chimezie. Lyrically, it adds a new chapter to the well-established "good girl gone bad" narrative and sees a young girl declare her freedom from other people's expectations.
A statement from the artist describes the song as being about "a pretty girl [talking about] how she has been welcomed and admired into a system that she has been shying away [under the influence of her parents]. But from now on, she is about to [become] a bad girl, as she has received profound compliments from street boys that she never got from her parents."
