Call for applications: 2019 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition
Young jazz and Western art music vocalists are invited to apply for the 2019 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition.
Four successful applicants will compete at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg on 17 August.
The SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition seeks to assist artists to further their musical studies. Each year, the SAMRO Foundation interchangeably awards singers (2019), instrumentalists (2020), keyboard players (2021) and composers (2020).
Last year's big composers' scholarship winners were Andrew Hoole and Conrad Asman in the Jazz and Western Art Music categories respectively.
Eligibility
- The competition is open to music students and professionals from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland, who are not older than 32 years of age.
- Each applicant must be within the field of jazz and Western art music.
Requirements
Each applicant must provide the following:
- A brief CV including a list of compositions.
- A brief biography of no more than 150 words, suitable for inclusion in the competition programme or publicity material.
- Most recent academic record or degree/diploma certificate.
- A description of plans for further study or masterclasses abroad and envisaged career path (max 300 words).
- Details of any other current study awards and bursaries.
- A recent high-resolution colour digital photo (head and shoulders only).
- A certified copy of your ID.
- Two current testimonials.
- Submission of a portfolio accompanied by MP3s (recorded at the minimum 16-bit stereo, 44.1 kHz) of the works as detailed under the submission of portfolios.
- A letter of confirmation by either the recording engineer or the applicant’s teacher verifying the authenticity and date of the unedited recording in compliance with the rules.
Please ensure that your name does not appear on or in the content of any of the MP3s submitted, as the identity of candidates must remain anonymous during the adjudication of the qualifying round.
