Call for applications: Artist residency in the US
US arts organisation Annmarie in association with the Smithsonian Institution is calling on artists to submit proposals for an annual summer residency programme in the community arts at Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.
Proposals must show a strong commitment to community engagement in the design and execution of the project. Artists are invited to submit a proposal for a community art project that will engage visitors of all ages. Applicants are expected to actively engage the public in an exciting and compelling project. Preference will be given to projects that use some or all recycled or repurposed materials. Artist is expected to work at least 28 hours a week directly with visitors.
Interested applicants should fill in an online form. The residency takes place between June and August and the submission deadline is 15 April.
Eligibility
- The residence programme is intended for professional and emerging musicians, visual artists and literary artists.
- Selection is made by an internal panel.
- Annmarie accommodates only one artist at a time.
Residence facilities
- Housing: A small individual rustic house equipped with very basic furnishings and kitchenware. The house is somewhat isolated and there is no public transport so artists must have their own cars. Artists are expected to bring their own linen and personal items. No washer/dryer in the house. Grocery store, post office, restaurants and laundry services are located within two miles of the site.
- Meals: Residents are responsible for their own meals; there is a private kitchen for the resident’s use.
- Other facilities and services: Access to standard office equipment can be arranged, including wireless Internet, copy, fax, etc. Artist will also have access to Annmarie forest, fields, and waterfront property. Bicycle and kayak available. Note that public transportation in southern Maryland is limited.
Annmarie will provide the following:
- A modest stipend or honorarium of about $225 a week.
- A modest project budget, typically $500 to $2 000, depending on the project.
- Housing (optional), the artLAB, studios, bicycle, kayak, sculpture garden, galleries, and programme administration.
Studios and special equipment
Most residents will work out of the artLAB located in the Murray Arts Building. When needed, artists will also have access to a private studio space within the living quarters, other gallery space, the sculpture garden, classrooms and the waterfront. Annmarie has a modest ceramics studio with a kiln, slab roller and potter’s wheels that are also available for use, as well as a painting studio with easels. With numerous indoor and outdoor exhibition and installation options, artists are encouraged think creatively about how and where to create and install their work.
